Pilgrim Route of John Paul II

Pope John Paul II, called the Pilgrim Pope, is considered to be one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century who has served as the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church for almost 27 years. During his papacy, John Paul II visited 129 countries, including Lithuania on 4-8 September 1993. He was the first pope ever to visit our country.

In total, fourteen sacral monuments have been included into the Pilgrim Route: Vilnius Cathedral Basilica, the Gate of Dawn Chapel and the Church of St. Therese, the Way of the Cross in Vilnius, the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trakai, Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, the Christ’s Resurrection Church in Kaunas, Pažaislis Camaldolese Monastery ensemble, the Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Chapel of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Šiluva and the surrounding area, the Hill of Crosses, Šiauliai Cathedral, the ensemble of Tytuvėnai Church and Monastery, Marijampolė Chapel and the Chapel of the Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis in Lūginė, Žemaičių Kalvarija (Samogitian Calvary) Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Visitation and the Chapels of the Way of the Cross, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Pivašiūnai.
