CTT Public Company

First Day Cover
Brochure
In 1520, Luiz Homem, by royal charter of 6th November, issued by king D. Manuel l, was entrusted with the duty of operating the postal service in Portugal, having been appointed to the office of first Postmaster General of the Reign.
Although private postal services were already in existence, belonging to the monarch and various illustrious figures, it was with this royal charter that the principle of public mail, open to whoever wished to use it, was institutionalized.
And it was this event of 6th November 1520 that conventionally marked the beginn.ng of the mail service in Portugal.
In 1606, after the death of Manoel de Gouvea (1598), fourth Postmaster General of the Reign, and a period when this office was exercised in an interim manner, king Felipe III of Spain (Felipe II of Portugal) decided to sell it to Luiz Gomes da making it officially hereditary.
This was the first privatisation of postal activity in our country.
Later, in 1797, the office of Postmaster General of the Reigns and Domains was extinct and reincorporated under the Crown through license of 16th March, during the re.gn of queen D. Maria l. At that time it was considered necessary for the State to claim for the Crown the Administration of the Postal Services, putting an end to the saga of the Postmaster Generals, and awarding the last - Manuel José da Maternidade da Mata de Souza Coutinho - with the title of Count of Penafiel, and later, the position of Minister Plenipotentiary and peer of the reign.
Close to 500 years later, this noble duty - the oldest in Portugal with formally structured activity - faces the challenges of the future with the opening of its equity to private investment.
The privatisation in December 2013 through placement on the capital market was a great success, having attracted representative international institutional investors and achieved the participation of
individuals who generated demand greater than nine times the shares on sale. This operation was conducted with rigour and transparency, emblematic and highty demonstrative of the country's capacity.
Currently, with shares listed on Euronext Lisbon, CTT shall continue to be a company which is increasingly more present in the life of all Portuguese, where proximity to all and the trust that has always been given to us are the crucial factors to tighten relations with People and companies.
With one of the largest networks in Portugal, CTT considers that the future will bring excellent opportunities and determination to further improve, ensuring that it is and shall be a modern, dynamic, innovative and sustainable company, based on exceptional professionals.

Madeira Self-Adhesive Stamps

First Day Cover
Brochure
One of the biggest tourist attractions in the archipelago of Madeira lies in its lush and varied vegetation, which stands out for its combination of tropical features with Mediterranean ones. A huge variety of gardens and parks fill the Madeira landscape in an extraordinary way, this is the case of the Jardim Botânico da Madeira – Engº Rui Vieira (Madeira Botanical Garden), that stands out in particular for the diversity of endemic species of the archipelagos of Madeira and Selvagens and other regions all over the World.

Madeira is known for the harmonious forms and contrasting colours of the many exotic plants from almost every continent, which are so well-adjusted here, as if in their own natural habitat. The beauty of these gardens is brought to us through plants of an ornamental nature and various other tropical and subtropical fruits available here. This is the case of the pitanga tree (Eugenia uniflora L.), which besides being an interesting little tree in ornamental terms, is also so in gastronomic terms. Its fruit is much appreciated, both fresh and as jam.

The island is appreciated not only for its breath-taking nature, but also for the landscapes that surround it. One of the many attractions it has to offer are the famous Levadas, waterways throughout the mountain, built by man (back in the early stages of colonization of the island), with the goal of bringing water from the slopes in the north, to the farmland in the south. Most routes are accessible to anyone, there are, however, varying degrees of difficulty. The Levada
do Caldeirão Verde is one of the nicest ones. It is inserted right in the Laurissilva (Laurel) forest, and one of its main features is the green colour that denotes its lush vegetation. Throughout the Levada you can find some of our endemic flora.

The first settlers of Madeira began farming in the lower slopes to the south of the island, where they cut out ledges or terraces, were one can find the apiaries that incorporate the landscape of this island.

The vegetation is so varied that it allows the production of different honeys - some lighter with a softer flavour, others darker and more nutritious, but all high-quality. The apiculture goes beyond providing economic gains – it has a huge importance in the maintenance and preservation of the environment and also in the quality of crops.

The volcanic origins remain clearly visible in places like the mountainous amphitheatre that surrounds Funchal. The island is extremely rugged, with peaks that reach up to 1860m altitude, hindering some important activities such as the distribution of mail. It is also characterized by cliffs/slopes, sometimes as tall as hundreds of metres. Postmen climb them up in one go and then distribute the mail on the way down, aided by the means of transport best-suited to overcome these demanding pathways - the quad bike.

900th Anniversary of the order of Malta

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Roman Catholic Order of Chivalry whose 900th anniversary is celebrated this year, is a unique and unusual example of a Sovereign Order unwaveringly dedicated to its Mission. In this sense, the Order has pledged to defend the Catholic Faith and provide assistance to the poor, the sick and all individuals whose circumstances cause them to suffer, without making any distinctions based on ethnicity, political opinions or social status.

Founded on 15 February 1113 through the Bula Piae Postulatio Voluntatis, signed by Pope Paschal II, the Order of St. John the Baptist, as it was known at the time, was granted its own Rule, having continued to pursue its Mission of practising christian charity.

Its presence together with the Military, Hospitaller and Religious actions, were hugely relevant, in the Mediterranean. From its successive military bases, first in Cyprus, then on Rhodes and finally in Malta, the Order fought tirelessly to defend christian principles and values.

The History of the Order of Malta was profoundly influenced by four Portuguese princes and grand masters, namely Frei Dom Afonso of Portugal, Frei Dom Luis Mendes de Vasconcellos, Frei Dom António Manoel de Vilhena and Frei Dom Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. Of particular relevance was the leadership of the last two grand masters, whose remarkable skills as Statesmen and unwavering Faith played a decisive role in the expansion of the Order and in its mission of spreading Western Christian civilisation.

Currently based in Rome, the Order of Malta, whose extraterritorial status and sovereignty are recognised by the Italian government, is governed by HMEH Prince and Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing, assisted by the Sovereign Council, from the Magistral Palace, located at Via dei Condotti. The Order boasts approximately 14 thousand members and 90 thousand volunteers in all five continents, in its many Priories, Sub-Priories and 46 National Associations, as well as accredited Ambassadors in the governments of 105 International States and Organisations. The octagonal cross, commonly known as the cruz de Malta (Maltese cross), is undeniably recognised as a universal and timeless symbol of Peace, Communion, Human Dignity and Christian Love.
The Assembleia dos Cavaleiros Portugueses da Ordem Soberana Militar de Malta (Assembly of the Portuguese Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta), founded in 1899, is the legitimate heir and follower of the spiritual, symbolic and hospitable traditions of the Order of Malta in Portugal. The Order of St. John, present in Portugal since the founding of the nation, takes pride not only in the rich history of the Order of Malta and its important contribution to the founding, building and consolidation of the Portuguese nation, but also in its current, active role against the new forms of poverty, always in Defence of the Faith and in aid of «our lords the sick and the poor», honouring its tradition while simultaneously embracing modernity and focusing on the future.

Therefore, the Conselho Diretivo da Assembleia Portuguesa (Governing Board of the Portuguese Assembly) would like to praise this initiative of CTT- Correios de Portugal and express their gratitude for this tribute paid to the Order of Malta in Portugal, recalling the importance of the Convenção Postal
(Postal Convention) once opportunely signed between the Order of Malta and the Portuguese Republic in order to facilitate the exchange of mail between both States, thus highlighting the crucial role of Communications throughout the ages.
