The cities of Lisbon and Porto will be different in the coming months, as the CTT will remove the iconic letterboxes of its streets. According to the newspaper ‘i’, citing a source from CTT will be removed 30.3% of the current 524 postboxes in Lisbon. In Oporto, this figure reaches 37.5% of the 221 postboxes.

Over the past two years, were removed 349 letter boxes throughout the country, a total of 15 000 that still exist. Many others will disappear as the CTT tries to match supply and location of collection points, which had a daily average of seven letters and alternatives nearby.

According to CTT, was not only the poor use of letter boxes that weighed in the decision to remove them. There are difficulties in collecting mail in terms of traffic and environmental impact, since the routes are defined for the collection made in light vehicles.
