Private stamps issue 'Capela dos Coimbras - Braga' |
The Chapel was built in 1525 by D. João Coimbra, Braga provisor of Mitra, and is dedicated to the Holy Lady. Initially, this chapel was private property, and was near the palace of Coimbras, built in the fifteenth century as a residence for clergy in the possession of D. João Coimbra.
The chapel, of Romanesque origin and likely traces Gothic, was built in the consulate of Archbishop Diogo de Sousa, and is the author of Biscainhos teachers, builders Biscainhos Palace. This has the shape of a square tower divided into two separate spaces, the porch and the inside. The porch, with Manueline ornaments, is authored by Filipe Odarte. The inner part, authored by Jean de Rouen, has the traditional high altar and weapons of D. João Coimbra. The chapel is covered by a ribbed dome and the walls are tiled images, alluding to Genesis.
In 1906 he was made an urban redevelopment of this area in Braga, having been demolished mansion of Coimbras, constructing a building close to the chapel. In the new home of Coimbras were integrated windows and doors of some old mansion. It was also created in the area, off St. João Souto, preserving some Manueline architectural elements.
The set of Home and Chapel Coimbras was classified as a National Monument.
Currently, in the House of Coimbras is installed a pole of the Mário Sequeira Art Gallery.
